It is considered very important for the people of Chiang Mai. The oldest temple in Chiang Mai and considered the first temple within the city wall. When Khun Mengrai the Great built the city of Chiang Mai in 1839, he raised the palace that bore his name. Chiang Man Palace was turned into a new monastery named Wat Chiang Man. This temple houses the most important Buddha image of Chiang Mai, namely Phra Sengkhamanee or Phra Kaew White.
